Flyers get the win over the league strugglers

It was job done for Winchester City Flyers on Sunday as they came away 2-0 winners over Selsey in the Southern Region Premier Division.

Sharna Capel-Watson's cross flew too close to the Selsey goal and the Seals' goalkeeper couldn't keep it out as the Flyers took the lead.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the visitors who had to wait until the 77th minute before doubling their lead with a great strike from Annie Northwood.

With three games in a week across three competitions Emma Pearmine's team travelled to the south coast looking for an important three points to move up the table.

In the opening exchanges it was the hosts who started the better and forced Ellie Parker into making two good saves within the first 10 minutes of the game.

14 minutes in the deadlock was broken and it was Winchester who took the lead.

Capel-Watson was played in behind and crossed into the box where the ball floated towards the goal and couldn't be kept out by the Selsey keeper.

The opener was followed up by efforts from Libby Wilkinson and Vinnie Nkomo that missed the target.

Winger Eliza Eaton had to recover as Selsey's number nine raced towards the Winchester goal but the youngster made the challenge that allowed Charlene Rooney to clear.

Frustrations rose from the visitors on the half hour mark as goal scorer Capel-Watson was sin -binned for an outburst towards the referee.

Selsey tried to take advantage of the numerical advantage but were caught offside on multiple occasions.

The hosts soon had a chance for the equaliser right on half-time when Parker raced off her line to clear but failed on the execution however, Selsey's striker couldn't find the target with the Flyers goal open.

A triple substitution for Winchester at the break saw Ella Hughes, Annie Northwood and Shayne Prasad introduced to the game.

Within minutes Northwood saw a shot well blocked.

It was a physical game mostly orchestrated by Selsey but it was the visitors who created more opportunities however, lacked the quality in the final third to truly test the Seals' keeper.

There were set pieces for the Flyers that they failed to capitalise on as the game edged towards it's conclusion.

With 77 minutes Rooney sent the ball deep into the Selsey half with the defender only able to flick the ball backwards where Northwood controlled before she drove into the area.

The striker shook off the pressure of the defender to fire into the goal from an angle for Winchester's second of the afternoon.

Northwood had a couple more shots at goal but both were off target before Parker had to punch clear a late Selsey corner to secure her sixth clean sheet of the season.

The final whistle came meaning the three points were heading back to Winchester and meant they moved up to sixth in the table above Sholing.

Full-time: Selsey 0 Flyers 2
