Flyers host Dorchester in the FA Cup
Winchester City Flyers head into Sunday’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup Second Qualifying Round looking to bounce back from a poor start to the league.
The Flyers have fallen to back-to-back 2-1 defeats on the road against Oxford City and Woodley United.
Last Sunday Woodley took the lead through Sarah Lawrence after Charlene Rooney had seen her header ruled out for offside.
The defender struck again in the second-half and this time her effort counted to draw the scores level however, United broke through in the final stages of the match as Lawrence’s chip found the back of the net for the winner.
This Sunday provides a chance for Winchester to take a break from the league action as the cup competitions come into play.
Dorchester Town are the visitors after their 3-1 win over league rivals Shaftesbury Town in the First Qualifying Round.
Zara Hunt scored within three minutes for Dorchester to put them ahead before Harriet Freeman doubled the lead nearly 20 minutes later.
Naomi Johnson wrapped up the win halfway through the second-half and despite the visitors scoring a couple minutes later Dorchester held on to secure a place in the next round.
Dorchester have also been free scoring in the only other competitive game played putting six past Longham in the Dorset League Division One.
There were braces for Harriett Browne and Hunt with Johnson also grabbing another goal and Kayleigh Whiting wrapping up the goals in the 6-1 win.
Last season the Flyers reached the Third Qualifying Round where their lost 2-1 against Ilminster Town of the South West Regional Western Division.
The winner of this match will earn £3,000 and a place in the next round where the clubs of the FA Women’s National League Division One leagues enter.
At this stage of the FA Cup if the game is level after 90 minutes the match will head straight to penalties to decide a winner.
Manager’s Thoughts
Dorchester aren’t a familiar foe for the Flyers but manager Emma Pearmine is ready for the challenge.
She said: “No I don't much about them, I've seen some good things.
“I see they can score goals, so we'll be very wary of that. But anyone that comes gets respect, but we'll be bringing it as well.
Pearmine also discussed earlier in the week the potential impact an run in the FA Cup could have.
She said: “Any run in a cup, let alone the FA Cup is brilliant for the girls, to get a bit of excitement around the club.
“Then we'll be moving to Winchester as our home ground hopefully for the next round or even the next round.
“But also, what comes with it now is the funding and to have that put back into the club, so we can help support even more girls, even more youth for everything would be great.
